BubbleUp is Honeycomb's signature investigation feature. Frontend-to-backend correlation connects browser-side user experience data with backend service behavior. When a page load is slow, you can trace the request from the frontend through microservices and database calls in a single view without switching between separate products.

OpenTelemetry-native, zero lock-in. Better Stack treats OpenTelemetry as a first-class citizen. Your traces use the OTel format natively. If you want to send traces to a different backend, you change a configuration line, not your entire instrumentation layer. Honeycomb shares this strength, and it's worth acknowledging that both platforms are genuine OpenTelemetry advocates. But Better Stack's eBPF approach means you can get production-grade traces running in minutes rather than the days or weeks that manual SDK instrumentation typically requires.

The tradeoff is depth. eBPF captures network-level interactions (HTTP calls, database queries, service-to-service communication) but cannot see into application internals the way manual SDK instrumentation can. Honeycomb's approach lets you attach arbitrary business context (customerid, featureflag, experiment_variant) to every span because you control the instrumentation code. That level of custom context is harder to achieve with eBPF alone, though Better Stack supports adding custom attributes via OpenTelemetry when you need them.

Honeycomb: SDK-based tracing with BubbleUp

Honeycomb was founded on the belief that distributed traces are the most important observability signal, and its tracing capabilities reflect that conviction. The platform stores every span as a wide event with unlimited custom fields, all queryable at sub-second speeds. Every field on every span becomes a dimension you can group by, filter on, or analyze.

BubbleUp is the differentiator. Select a region of interest in a heatmap (say, the P99 latency spike between 2:00 and 2:15 AM), and BubbleUp automatically compares the attributes of those spans against the baseline. Log analytics

Honeycomb came to logs relatively late. For most of its history, the platform was trace-first, and logs were treated as a secondary signal. Honeycomb for Log Analytics launched in late 2024 and brought a log-native experience into the platform, but the approach is fundamentally different from traditional log management. The catch is that Honeycomb's log analytics is built around structured events, not traditional log lines. Gartner Peer Insights reviewers note that Honeycomb works best with well-structured, standardized data, and that ingesting unstructured logs requires additional effort. If your logs are already structured JSON events, Honeycomb's approach works beautifully. If you're dealing with raw syslog output, legacy application logs, or mixed-format log streams, you'll need Honeycomb Telemetry Pipeline to parse and structure them first.

Honeycomb Telemetry Pipeline helps here. It deploys and manages a fleet of OpenTelemetry Collectors that can collect, enrich, filter, sample, and route data before ingestion. Both platforms take a progressive stance on metrics pricing: neither charges per unique time series in the way that Datadog's custom metrics billing does. Honeycomb: metrics as wide events

Honeycomb Metrics reached general availability in March 2026 and takes an unconventional approach. Rather than treating metrics as a separate time series database, Honeycomb derives metrics from wide events. Every span field can become a custom metric, queryable across the full trace dataset. The advantage is that Honeycomb's metrics inherit the same high-cardinality, BubbleUp-powered investigation capabilities as traces and logs. A metric becomes "debuggable" in ways traditional metrics tools don't support because you can always drill into the underlying events. Notion, one of Honeycomb's customers, praised this approach for letting them collect time series data for standard metrics while adding dimensions like host IDs and container metadata without cardinality billing concerns.

The limitation is maturity. Honeycomb Metrics is a newer product, and the integration ecosystem for Prometheus-native workflows is less established than what Better Stack offers. If your infrastructure already runs Prometheus exporters and you need drop-in PromQL compatibility, Better Stack provides a more direct path.

AI is the area where Honeycomb has invested most aggressively, and it shows. Honeycomb Intelligence is a suite of AI features (Canvas, MCP, Anomaly Detection, Automated Investigations) that's broader and more mature than what most observability platforms offer. Better Stack has its own AI capabilities (AI SRE and MCP server), but the approaches differ in focus and scope.

Better Stack: AI SRE and MCP server

AI SRE activates autonomously during incidents. It analyzes your service map, queries logs, reviews recent deployments, and suggests likely root causes without manual prompting. During a 3 AM incident, you start from a hypothesis rather than a blank screen.

Better Stack MCP server connects AI assistants (Claude, Cursor, or any MCP-compatible client) directly to your observability data. Your AI assistant can query logs via ClickHouse SQL, check who's on-call, acknowledge incidents, or build dashboard charts through natural language. Honeycomb Intelligence is a full AI suite with four components:

Canvas is an AI copilot embedded in the Honeycomb UI that answers natural-language observability questions, generates queries, surfaces insights, and guides investigations interactively. The MCP server can access boards, triggers, SLOs, queries, and other resources. Users report real productivity gains, and several case studies highlight significant time savings (a Fortune 500 retailer used it for real-time Black Friday insights; a streaming service connected Honeycomb and Slack MCPs to surface root cause from support requests).

Anomaly Detection learns what "normal" looks like for your specific applications and automatically surfaces genuine issues without requiring manual threshold configuration. This proactive approach transforms observability from reactive firefighting to early warning.

Honeycomb's AI story is broader than Better Stack's. Canvas provides a richer in-platform investigation experience, and Automated Investigations and Anomaly Detection add proactive capabilities that Better Stack's AI SRE doesn't yet match in depth. If AI-assisted investigation is a primary evaluation criterion, Honeycomb has the stronger offering today.

Frontend observability

Honeycomb calls their product "Frontend Observability" rather than "Real User Monitoring" for a reason: it's built around performance debugging with BubbleUp, not traditional session replay and product analytics. Better Stack's RUM is a broader product that includes session replay, website analytics, product analytics, and error tracking alongside Core Web Vitals monitoring.

Better Stack RUM captures frontend sessions, JavaScript errors, Core Web Vitals, user behavior analytics, and session replays. It sits in the same data warehouse as backend telemetry, so frontend events, errors, and traces are queryable with SQL in the same interface.

Session replay lets you watch user interactions, filter by rage clicks, dead clicks, and errors, and play back at 2x speed with automatic pause-skipping. Sensitive fields are excluded at the SDK level.

Website analytics tracks referrers, UTM campaigns, entry/exit pages, locales, and user agents in real time. You can see whether traffic comes from ChatGPT, Google, or a marketing campaign and correlate it with backend load.

Core Web Vitals (LCP, CLS, INP) are tracked per URL with alerting when performance degrades.

Product analytics with auto-captured user events and funnel analysis means you can define what matters retroactively.

Error tracking is built in. Session replays link to JavaScript errors and backend traces. The same Claude Code / Cursor debugging prompts work for frontend errors.

Honeycomb: Frontend Observability with BubbleUp

Honeycomb for Frontend Observability (GA for Enterprise customers) focuses on Core Web Vitals debugging. An open-source OpenTelemetry-based NPM package collects CWV attribution data. The Web Launchpad provides a dashboard view, and BubbleUp automatically surfaces which elements and scripts correlate with poor CWV scores.

The strength is debugging depth. BubbleUp analyzes up to 2,000 attributes per span to identify what's causing poor performance scores. When combined with backend tracing, you get end-to-end visibility from the browser through microservices. The React Native SDK (beta) extends this to mobile.

What Honeycomb Frontend Observability does not include: session replay, product analytics, funnel analysis, website analytics (referrers, UTM tracking), or traditional RUM dashboards with user counts and engagement metrics. If you need those capabilities, you'll add another vendor. How many separate tools does your frontend team currently use to understand user experience end to end?

SLOs and service map

Honeycomb has two built-in features that deserve their own section because they represent genuine product strengths: Service Level Objectives (SLOs) and the Service Map.

Honeycomb SLOs

Honeycomb's SLO implementation is well-regarded. Define error budgets based on any query, track burn rates, and alert when SLOs are at risk. SLOs tie directly to Honeycomb's query engine, so you can define objectives on any combination of fields, not just pre-defined metrics. The SLO Reporting API makes SLO data accessible programmatically. Enterprise plans include up to 100 SLOs (starting from 2 on Pro).

Better Stack

Better Stack provides monitor-based alerting and uptime SLAs through its monitoring product. SLO tracking is available through monitors and dashboards, though the implementation is more operational (uptime-focused) than Honeycomb's query-driven approach. If SLO-based engineering practices (error budgets, burn rate alerts, SLO-driven prioritization) are central to your team's workflow, Honeycomb's SLO product is more mature.

The Service Map provides a dynamic, query-driven visualization of service dependencies. You can filter the map by specific query criteria, isolate services, and drill directly into sample traces from the map view. It's not a static topology diagram; it reflects live query results and updates as you adjust your investigation. Enterprise-only feature.

Better Stack also provides a service map that shows service relationships and dependencies. Both platforms deliver this capability, though Honeycomb's query-driven approach is more tightly integrated with its investigation workflow.

Telemetry Pipeline

Honeycomb Telemetry Pipeline is a product that Better Stack handles differently, and it's worth understanding the distinction.

Honeycomb Telemetry Pipeline provides centralized management of a fleet of OpenTelemetry Collectors. You can collect, enrich, filter, sample, and route data before it reaches Honeycomb, with Pipeline Intelligence (AI-powered) automating pipeline configuration. Pricing starts at $0.10/GB for ingestion into the pipeline. This is practically useful for organizations dealing with massive volumes of heterogeneous telemetry data that needs to be normalized, filtered, and routed before analysis.

Better Stack takes a different approach: it supports Vector as a log processing pipeline and integrates natively with OpenTelemetry collectors, but it doesn't offer a managed pipeline-as-a-product. The eBPF collector handles much of what a telemetry pipeline would do (automatic service discovery, data collection, structured event creation), but if you need sophisticated pre-ingestion data transformation across dozens of log sources, Honeycomb's managed pipeline is a stronger offering.

Honeycomb

Honeycomb does not have a dedicated error tracking product. Errors surface as events in traces and logs, and you can query for them, but there's no error grouping, issue tracking, regression detection, or Sentry-compatible SDK support. You'll need a separate error tracking tool (Sentry, Bugsnag, etc.) alongside Honeycomb. Is your team comfortable managing a separate vendor just for error tracking when Better Stack includes it natively?

Honeycomb has a broader compliance posture than many observability platforms, and this is an area where it clearly outperforms Better Stack today.

Honeycomb

Honeycomb is SOC 2 Type II certified, GDPR compliant, HIPAA compliant (with BAA available for Pro/Enterprise customers), and PCI DSS compliant as a merchant. It offers Secure Tenancy (patented technology that keeps data encrypted with customer-managed keys, decrypted only in the customer's browser), data residency in US, EU, and APAC regions, and AWS PrivateLink for Enterprise customers.

Honeycomb Private Cloud (launched late 2025) provides single-tenant, multi-tenant, customer-hosted, and self-managed deployment options for organizations with strict compliance, data privacy, or performance isolation requirements. This is designed for regulated industries (healthcare, financial services, government) that need data to remain fully under their governance.

Enterprise features include activity logging, SSO/SAML, and role-based access control (though some reviewers note that RBAC granularity could be improved, with only three permission levels currently available).

Better Stack

Better Stack is SOC 2 Type II compliant and GDPR compliant, with SSO/SAML via Okta, Azure, and Google, SCIM provisioning, RBAC, audit logs, and data residency in EU and US regions with optional self-hosted data in your S3 bucket. AES-256 encryption at rest and TLS in transit.

Better Stack is not HIPAA compliant and does not hold PCI DSS certification. There is no equivalent to Honeycomb's Secure Tenancy or Private Cloud deployment options.

If you're in healthcare, financial services, or government and need HIPAA compliance, Private Cloud deployment, or customer-managed encryption keys, Honeycomb has a clear advantage.

For standard enterprise procurement (SOC 2, GDPR, SSO, RBAC, audit logs), both platforms pass. Honeycomb has the edge in regulated industries with HIPAA, PCI DSS, Private Cloud deployment, and Secure Tenancy. Better Stack has the edge in operational completeness, covering the full incident lifecycle without third-party dependencies. Which matters more depends on your industry and your team's willingness to manage multiple vendors. Is your procurement team more concerned about HIPAA certification, or about consolidating five vendor contracts into one?

Final thoughts

Honeycomb is an excellent observability platform within its scope. The columnar data store is fast. BubbleUp is a uniquely effective investigation tool. Canvas AI is one of the best AI copilots in the observability space. The OpenTelemetry commitment is real and deep. And the compliance posture (HIPAA, PCI DSS, Private Cloud) makes it viable for regulated industries where Better Stack isn't yet an option.

But scope matters. Honeycomb covers observability (traces, logs, metrics, frontend performance) and AI-assisted investigation. It does not cover incident management, on-call scheduling, phone/SMS alerting, escalation policies, status pages, session replay RUM, or dedicated error tracking. Those gaps mean you'll assemble a multi-vendor stack (Honeycomb + PagerDuty + Statuspage.io + Sentry, at minimum), manage four vendor relationships, pay four invoices, and maintain integrations between four systems.

Better Stack covers all of that in one platform. Logs, metrics, traces, RUM with session replay, error tracking, incident management with unlimited phone/SMS alerts, status pages with multi-channel subscriber notifications, and AI SRE with an MCP server.
