Linode (Akamai Cloud) Review 2026

Linode has been around since 2003, which makes it one of the oldest independent VPS providers in the industry. It spent nearly two decades building a reputation for solid Linux infrastructure, competitive pricing, and unusually good developer documentation, before Akamai acquired it in 2022.

That acquisition changed the brand name (you'll see "Akamai Cloud" in the control panel and marketing materials) but not much else day-to-day. The underlying product is still recognizably Linode: Linux VMs, clean dashboard, transparent pricing. What the Akamai deal adds is global network reach, a rapidly expanding GPU catalog, and the infrastructure backing a scrappy indie provider couldn't offer alone.

This review answers whether the platform holds up in 2026 with real benchmark data. We provisioned a 2 vCPU / 4 GB RAM Shared CPU Linode in the Chicago (us-ord) datacenter and ran YABS to measure disk I/O, network throughput, and CPU performance.

What Linode offers

Linode's compute product is organized around Linodes, their term for virtual machines. Plans fall into several tiers depending on workload requirements.

Shared CPU is the general-purpose entry tier, running on legacy hardware. These plans share physical CPU resources with other customers, making them cost-effective for development, testing, and variable workloads. Bundled monthly outbound transfer is included on all Shared CPU plans.

Dedicated CPU plans are organized by generation (G6, G7, and G8 in the current UI), each giving you exclusive access to physical cores with no resource contention. The current flagship is the G8 Dedicated tier, backed by 5th Gen AMD EPYC Zen 5 processors and available in a general-purpose 1:4 CPU-to-RAM VM shape. G7 runs 3rd Gen AMD EPYC Zen 3 and is suited to CPU-intensive production workloads. G6 legacy plans remain available for teams that don't need the latest hardware. Note that G8 Dedicated plans use usage-based bandwidth billing with no bundled outbound transfer, while G6 and G7 include bundled transfer that scales with plan size.

High Memory plans use dedicated cores but favor RAM over CPU count, suited to in-memory databases, Redis, and caching layers.

GPU plans offer NVIDIA hardware across three tiers. The RTX 4000 Ada Generation targets entry-to-mid-range AI inference, media processing, and visualization workloads. The RTX 6000 Quadro is geared toward professional visualization and CAD. The RTX PRO 6000 Blackwell Server Edition is the newest addition, available in 1-card, 2-card, and 4-card configurations with 96 GB of GPU VRAM per card, starting at $1,665/month for a single-card instance. Akamai benchmarks show it delivering up to 1.63x higher inference throughput than an NVIDIA H100 (measured with the RTX PRO 6000 running FP4 against the H100 at FP8), making it well-suited for large language model serving, agentic AI, and multimodal workloads. This GPU underpins Akamai Inference Cloud, the company's distributed AI inference platform launched in October 2025. All GPU plans require account approval and carry no bundled transfer.

Accelerated Compute plans use NETINT Quadra T1U VPUs designed specifically for video transcoding workloads.

Beyond compute, Linode offers managed databases (MySQL and PostgreSQL), Kubernetes (LKE), an App Platform for container-based deployments, serverless compute via Akamai Functions, S3-compatible Object Storage, Block Storage Volumes, NodeBalancers (managed load balancers), a DNS Manager, Cloud Firewall, and VPC networking. There's also a Marketplace for one-click app deployments. The platform covers what a real team building production applications needs, without the sprawl of AWS.

Setup and first impressions

Linode provisioning is fast, though the flow has grown more involved since the Akamai rebrand. The "Create a Linode" page organizes creation methods into tabs (OS, Marketplace, StackScripts, Images, Backups, and Clone Linode), which keeps the interface focused without burying options.

For this review we provisioned a Shared CPU Linode 4 GB: 2 vCPU / 80 GB SSD / 4 TB transfer in the Chicago (us-ord) region, running Ubuntu 24.04 LTS. Monthly cost: $24/month.

The region selector comes first. A helpful link to Akamai's speed test page sits alongside the dropdown, which is a practical touch for choosing the datacenter that performs best for your location before you commit. The OS selection covers Ubuntu, Debian, Fedora, AlmaLinux, Rocky Linux, CentOS, openSUSE, Arch, and Gentoo — Ubuntu 24.04 LTS is the default, with a version dropdown to pin to an earlier LTS release if your stack requires it.

The plan selector is organized into tabs: Dedicated CPU, Shared CPU, High Memory, GPU, Premium CPU, and Accelerated. Each plan card shows monthly price, hourly equivalent, vCPU count, RAM, storage, transfer allowance, and network in/out bandwidth, so there's no need to jump to a separate pricing page mid-flow.

The Details section sets a hostname, adds tags for organization, and optionally assigns a Placement Group to control physical host distribution. Further down, the Security section handles root password and SSH keys — keys stored at the account level appear in a table, and checking the box next to one deploys it automatically. Disk encryption is enabled by default, which is a meaningful security baseline without extra configuration and a step ahead of providers that make this opt-in.

The Networking section gives you a choice between Public Internet, VPC, or VLAN connectivity, then a choice between "Linode Interfaces" (currently in beta and recommended) or the legacy "Configuration Profile Interfaces." The beta badge on the recommended option is worth noting: it works, but it's under active development.

After clicking Create Linode, the VM is ready in roughly 60 to 90 seconds. IPv6 is provisioned automatically alongside IPv4, with no separate opt-in required.

Benchmarks (YABS)

We ran Yet Another Bench Script immediately after provisioning with no other load on the machine.

Results were run on Ubuntu 24.04.3 LTS, kernel 6.8.0-71-generic, KVM virtualization, Chicago, IL.

This is a strong result for a shared CPU plan at this price. The AMD EPYC 7713 is a server-class processor, and a single-core score of 1,343 is well above what you'd expect at the $24/month tier — competitive with dedicated-tier performance from providers charging significantly more. For context within this benchmark series, the Vultr Cloud Compute High Performance AMD instance scored 1,926 single-core on newer EPYC-Genoa silicon, while the DigitalOcean Basic Droplet at the same price came in at 772. Linode sits comfortably in the middle of that range.

CPU-bound workloads such as compilation, image processing, and data transformation will feel noticeably responsive on this hardware. The multi-core score of 2,490 reflects solid scaling across both vCPUs.

VM-x/AMD-V shows as disabled, meaning nested virtualization is not available on this shared plan. This is expected and only matters if your workload requires running VMs inside a VM.

Disk I/O

fio results show strong NVMe-backed performance across all block sizes:

94.5k combined 4k IOPS is a strong result for a shared plan at this price point. Sequential reads scaling past 2.68 GB/s at 1m block size confirm genuine NVMe storage rather than emulated or throttled SSD. For database workloads, write-heavy applications, or anything where disk latency shows up in request times, this is a tier of performance that was once reserved for dedicated plans.

Network

The server is in Chicago, and network results reflect its US-East positioning strongly. The NYC result is exceptional: 4.34 Gbits/sec send and 7.98 Gbits/sec receive at just 20.1 ms, indicating serious upstream peering with US East Coast carriers.

Transatlantic performance sits between 89 and 100 ms to London and Amsterdam with 2+ Gbits/sec throughput, which is reasonable for a US-based origin. The Clouvider London test reported "busy" on IPv4 send, reflecting a temporarily saturated test endpoint rather than a Linode network issue; the IPv6 result from the same provider was clean.

IPv6 performance closely mirrors IPv4 throughout, with no meaningful degradation. Linode provisions IPv6 automatically on all new instances, with no opt-in or manual configuration required.

Singapore and Tashkent latency sits between 190 and 220 ms, as expected for a US Midwest origin. If your users are concentrated in Asia, the Tokyo, Singapore, or Mumbai Linode regions are the right choice.

Support

Linode offers ticket-based support on all plans, available 24/7. There is no live chat and no phone support for standard accounts. Response times vary and are not guaranteed under a formal SLA on the base tier.

The free tier covers the majority of technical questions and is generally considered competent. For teams running production infrastructure who need faster escalation, Linode Managed at $100/month per instance adds 24/7 monitoring and active incident response — effectively buying a dedicated ops layer rather than just a faster queue.

Community resources partially offset the support limitations. The guide library at techdocs.akamai.com is thorough, and the community forum at linode.com/community has an active archive of resolved issues. For straightforward Linux infrastructure problems, finding an answer without opening a ticket is usually possible.

For teams with strict on-call SLAs and no internal ops staff, the absence of live chat or tiered guaranteed response times is worth factoring into your decision.

Uptime and reliability

Linode offers a 99.99% monthly uptime SLA for all compute services, including Dedicated CPU, Shared CPU, High Memory, GPU, and Nanode plans. This is credit-backed: if uptime falls below the guarantee in any calendar month, you can open a support ticket within 30 days to request a pro-rata credit.

Managed non-compute services (LKE, Block Storage, Object Storage, NodeBalancers, DNS Manager, Managed Databases, and Backups) are covered by a separate 99.9% monthly uptime SLA, also credit-backed.

Control panel and management

The Linode detail page provides power controls, performance graphs (CPU, network I/O, disk I/O), Lish browser-based console access, snapshot management, and resize options. The interface is functional and well-organized, though the Akamai rebrand has introduced some visual inconsistency: some pages still read "Linode" while others say "Akamai Cloud," and navigation between the two can feel fragmented.

A few features worth highlighting:

Lish console. Browser-based terminal access that works without SSH, useful for locked-out scenarios or misconfigured firewall rules. Linode has offered this longer than most comparable providers and it's consistently reliable.

Block Storage Volumes. Attachable NVMe block storage at $0.10/GB/month, independent of the Linode's boot disk. Volumes persist across Linode resizes, can be detached and reattached to other Linodes in the same region, and are useful for separating application data from compute.

Snapshots. On-demand full-disk images of a running Linode, stored via the Images service at $0.10/GB/month (up to 25 images and 150 GB per account). Useful for cloning configured instances, rolling back after a failed deploy, or keeping a pre-migration baseline.

Automated backups. An optional add-on covering three rotating slots: daily, 2 to 7 days old, and 8 to 14 days old. Pricing is per plan, approximately $5/month for the $24 Shared Linode 4 GB. Simple and predictably priced per instance.

Cloud Firewall. A network-level firewall configurable from the control panel, enforced at the host level before traffic reaches your Linode. Supports inbound and outbound rules and can be assigned during provisioning or added to an existing instance.

VPC and private networking. VPC provides Layer 3 private networking between Linodes in the same region without traffic leaving Akamai's network. VLAN provides Layer 2 local networking for lower-latency internal communication. Both are included at no additional cost.

StackScripts. A scripting layer for automating Linode provisioning at creation time, similar to cloud-init user data. A community library of scripts covers common stacks. Combined with the Linode API or Terraform provider, this makes the platform approachable as infrastructure-as-code.

Placement Groups. Assign instances to spread across different physical hosts, reducing the blast radius of a hardware failure. Available at no extra cost and set during or after provisioning.

The ecosystem

Managed Databases cover MySQL and PostgreSQL, backed by dedicated G7 hardware (3rd Gen AMD EPYC). Available in 1-node (standalone) or 3-node (high availability) configurations. A single-node G7 PostgreSQL cluster with 4 GB RAM starts at $81.60/month; a 3-node HA cluster at that same tier runs $246/month. The dedicated hardware backing means stable CPU resources and consistent throughput under load, with automated daily backups, multi-node failover, and SSL enforcement included. The trade-off is price: managed databases are a premium product here, not an entry-level add-on.

Kubernetes (LKE). Linode Kubernetes Engine provisions worker nodes as standard Linodes, so existing platform familiarity carries over. The standard control plane is free; high-availability control planes cost $60/cluster/month. LKE-Enterprise adds a dedicated control plane and full HA at $300/cluster/month. Worker node pricing follows standard Linode plan rates. Integrates natively with Block Storage Volumes and NodeBalancers.

App Platform. A container-based deployment platform for running application workloads without managing the underlying infrastructure, suitable for teams that want a Heroku-like experience on Akamai's network.

Akamai Functions. Serverless compute for event-driven workloads, running at Akamai's edge locations. Useful for lightweight API endpoints, webhooks, and latency-sensitive handlers that benefit from geographic distribution.

Akamai Inference Cloud. Launched in October 2025, this is the most significant new product since the acquisition. It combines NVIDIA RTX PRO 6000 Blackwell Server Edition GPUs, NVIDIA BlueField-3 DPUs, and Akamai's globally distributed infrastructure to provide AI inference at the edge. The platform is purpose-built for teams that need low-latency AI workloads closer to users rather than centralized in a single hyperscaler region. Akamai benchmarks show the Blackwell GPU delivering up to 1.63x higher inference throughput than an H100 (RTX PRO 6000 running FP4 vs. H100 at FP8). For teams building or deploying LLMs, agentic AI, or multimodal applications, this is the most compelling reason to look at Akamai Cloud in 2026.

Object Storage. S3-compatible storage at $0.02/GB with a $5/month minimum fee for accounts with less than 250 GB. Enabling Object Storage adds 1 TB of outbound transfer to your account's global monthly transfer pool. No bundled CDN; Akamai's delivery network is a separate product.

NodeBalancers. Managed load balancers at $10/month each. Support SSL termination, passive health checks, and sticky sessions. Straightforward to integrate with LKE clusters and provisioned via the API or Cloud Manager.

DNS Manager. Included at no extra cost. Supports A, AAAA, CNAME, MX, TXT, SRV, and CAA records with global propagation. A solid option for domains tied to Linode-hosted infrastructure.

Linode Managed. An optional add-on at $100/month per Linode. Includes 24/7 infrastructure monitoring, incident response, and direct access to a support team. Worth considering for teams running production infrastructure without dedicated ops staff.

Documentation and community

Linode's documentation has been a genuine competitive differentiator for years. The guides are thorough, commands include real expected output, and the library covers most Linux administration and deployment scenarios in depth. Post-acquisition, the docs live at techdocs.akamai.com and the community Q&A forum remains at linode.com/community.

Content quality has held up through the migration. The main friction is navigational: Akamai and Linode branding coexist inconsistently across documentation pages, and finding the right guide sometimes requires knowing which brand a given article was filed under. It's a manageable inconvenience rather than a gap in coverage, though it does add friction during onboarding.

Pricing

The Shared CPU Linode 4 GB costs $24/month ($0.036/hour). All Shared CPU plans include monthly outbound transfer; overage is billed at $0.005/GB:

The $24/month plan includes 4 TB of outbound transfer, which covers most production workloads without overage charges. Egress overages are billed at $0.005/GB. For teams looking at budget US providers in the same tier, Linode sits at a mid-range price point: more than European options like Hetzner, but with US datacenter presence, a broader managed services catalog, and better network peering for East Coast audiences.

Who Linode is for

Linode works well for:

  • Developers who prioritize documentation and platform maturity. The guide library is genuinely among the best in the industry, and the platform has been production-tested for over two decades.
  • US East Coast-focused workloads. The 7.98 Gbits/sec receive from NYC at 20 ms is among the strongest results in this benchmark series.
  • Teams that want strong compute performance on shared plans. A Geekbench 6 single-core score of 1,343 and 94.5k combined 4k IOPS at $24/month are results that hold up well against the market.
  • Infrastructure-as-code workflows. StackScripts, a well-maintained API, a Terraform provider, and cloud-init support make reproducible provisioning practical.
  • AI inference workloads. Akamai Inference Cloud and the RTX PRO 6000 Blackwell GPU plans make this a serious option in 2026 for teams deploying LLMs and agentic applications at the edge.

Linode is a harder fit for:

  • Teams needing affordable managed databases. Managed databases here are priced as a dedicated, production-grade product. Teams looking for a cheap add-on database will find the entry price steep.
  • APAC-primary audiences. Singapore and Tokyo latency from Chicago exceeds 220 ms. Linode has appropriate regions in those areas, but the default US deployment doesn't serve Asian users efficiently.
  • Teams that need live chat or phone support. Support is ticket-only, with no chat, no phone, and variable response times.

Pros

  • AMD EPYC 7713 delivers strong single-core performance: 1,343 on Geekbench 6 is well above average for shared plans at this price
  • Disk I/O is excellent: 94.5k combined 4k IOPS and 5.5 GB/s sequential throughput are top-tier results for the tier

  • Disk encryption enabled by default at provisioning, with no extra steps required
  • 4 TB monthly transfer included on the $24 plan
  • 99.99% compute uptime SLA with credit-backed remediation
  • Solid managed services ecosystem: Kubernetes, databases, block storage, NodeBalancers, App Platform, and serverless via Akamai Functions
  • Akamai Inference Cloud and Blackwell GPU plans make it a genuinely relevant option for AI inference workloads in 2026
  • Documentation quality remains among the best in the developer cloud market
  • VPC, Cloud Firewall, private networking, DNS Manager, and placement groups all included at no additional cost

Cons

Final thoughts

Linode's benchmarks at $24/month speak for themselves: a Geekbench 6 single-core score of 1,343, 94.5k combined 4k IOPS, and near-8 Gbits/sec NYC network receive on a shared plan is a strong result at this price point.

The platform has been well-maintained since 2022 and the product catalog has expanded meaningfully. G8 Dedicated plans now run AMD Zen 5 processors, and the launch of Akamai Inference Cloud with NVIDIA Blackwell GPUs signals a serious push into AI infrastructure. That's a different company from the scrappy indie VPS provider Linode used to be, and for teams with AI workloads it's now a more compelling option. Brand and documentation fragmentation are still visible, and long-term pricing direction is harder to predict than when Linode was independent.

For US-focused workloads on a developer-friendly Linux platform, Linode is a solid choice with competitive raw performance and a managed services ecosystem that covers most production needs. If raw cost efficiency is the primary constraint, European providers offer harder numbers to argue against, though you trade US network peering, East Coast latency, and managed services depth to get there.
