# Jira & Better Stack integration

Create Jira work items from incidents, and acknowledge or resolve incidents without leaving Jira.

## Connect Jira

1. Go to **Integrations → [Exporting data](https://incidents.betterstack.com/team/0/integrations/exporting-data ";_blank")** and click **Add** on the **Jira** card.
2. Click **Accept** in Jira. If your Atlassian account has more than one Jira site, select the site and click **Connect site**.
3. Under **Work item properties**, pick the **Space** and **Work type** for new work items.
4. Turn on **Create a work item every time an incident occurs** and click **Save changes**.

The integration works with Jira Cloud, not Jira Data Center.

## Acknowledge and resolve incidents from Jira

With Better Stack for Jira, everyone who opens a work item sees its incidents and can acknowledge, resolve or reopen them right there.

1. Open [Better Stack for Jira](https://marketplace.atlassian.com/apps/115641052/better-stack-for-jira ";_blank") on the Atlassian Marketplace, click **Get it now** and pick your Jira site. A Jira site admin approves the install.
2. Back in Better Stack, open your Jira integration from [Integrations](https://incidents.betterstack.com/team/0/integrations ";_blank") and click the **Connect** button with your team's name under **Acknowledge and resolve incidents from Jira**.
3. Each responder clicks **Connect Better Stack account** in the **Better Stack** panel on a work item once, then **Connect account** in Better Stack. From then on, **Acknowledge** and **Resolve** act as them, and the incident timeline shows their name.

Several Better Stack teams on one Jira site? Connect Jira in each team, then click the **Connect** button with that team's name on its Jira integration.

#### Work item shows no incidents?
1. Open the incident in Better Stack and click **Create Jira** at the top.
2. Click **Create work item**, or open the **Link to existing** tab, search for your work item and click **Link to work item**.

The **Better Stack** panel lists the incidents linked to a work item, so a work item filed by hand in Jira shows none until you link it.

## Create work items from incidents

- Open an incident and click **Create Jira** to create a work item for it, or switch to **Link to existing** to attach one.
- Want work items for some incidents only? Turn **Create a work item every time an incident occurs** off and add **Jira integrations** to a step of an [escalation policy](https://incidents.betterstack.com/team/0/policies ";_blank") instead.
- Better Stack comments on the work item when the incident is acknowledged, resolved or reopened. Turn on **Update work item status when incident is resolved** in your Jira integration to also move the work items it creates automatically to a status you pick.

## Do more with Jira and Better Stack

- **Send errors to Jira.** File bugs from Errors as Jira work items, by hand or automatically for new errors. It's a separate connection: see [Jira for errors](https://betterstack.com/docs/errors/integrations/jira/).
- **Acknowledge or resolve by moving a work item.** Move the work item Better Stack created or linked for an incident, for example to Done, and a Jira Automation flow acknowledges or resolves the incident. Open your Jira integration from [Integrations](https://incidents.betterstack.com/team/0/integrations ";_blank"), expand **Advanced settings** and copy the steps under **Acknowledging incidents** and **Resolving incidents**.
- **Create incidents from Jira work items.** Page on-call the moment someone files an urgent work item, for example a customer request in Jira Service Management. See [Create incidents from Jira](https://betterstack.com/docs/uptime/jira/better-uptime/create/).
